I paint the office, take some furniture out, move in new, add a different rug.  Now as the task of neatening again lays before me, books, notebooks, journals, albums, paints, all lay before me, I put on Robbie Robertson and let ‘Somewhere Down The Crazy River’ see me through.

There are some albums of which I shall never tire.  Five come to mind.

Robbie Robertson, Robbie Robertson.

Sexy, pensive, rocking, hot.   ‘Somewhere down the crazy river’ plays in the car the other day and my daughter says:

“Is this supposed to be a song?  Because he’s not singing.”

The innocence of a ten year old.  She doesn’t get it (she shouldn’t – not yet).

Red Earth, Crash Vegas.

From my days in Toronto, early 90s.  I was lucky enough to be invited to watch an intimate recording session for this band.  It’s not often that I think someone else does a Neil Young song better than Neil Young, but ‘Down To the Wire’ is one of them. Plus the singer used to date Greg Keelor so influence of Keelor and Blue Rodeo are felt.

This album is always over too soon.

Paul Simon, Paul Simon.

When I was a kid, I used to play ‘Mother And Child Reunion’ over and over again and slide around on our basement floor in my socks.  I was an amazing figure skater.  But ‘Everything Put Together Falls Apart’ is my all-time favourite Simon song.

Magical Mystery Tour by a little know band called The…you know.   This has always been the first I pick off the shelf.  ‘The Fool On The Hill’, ‘I Am The Walrus’, ‘Baby You’re A Rich Man’, ‘Hello Goodbye’.   Christ, all of them:  masterstrokes.

And Boz Scaggs’ Hits!

If only for the cover shot.  Nice blazer.  Did all men roll their blazer sleeves up to the elbows for a short period of time?  He has better album covers (see:  Middle Man).  But this collection is like a roll full of heavenly candies or a bag full of salty vinegary chips.  Can’t stop till it is all done.   You Can Have Me Anytime.
